Eric Eustace Williams, born on 25 September 1911 in Port of Spain, Trinidad, emerged from humble beginnings to become one of the most transformative figures in Caribbean history. Raised in a working-class family, Williams demonstrated academic brilliance early on, earning a scholarship to Queen’s Royal College, the island’s premier secondary institution. His intellectual promise secured him further opportunities abroad, and in 1932, he traveled to England on a government scholarship to study at Oxford University. There, he earned a first-class degree in history and later completed his doctoral thesis, which evolved into the groundbreaking 1944 publication *Capitalism and Slavery*. This work challenged prevailing colonial narratives by asserting that economic decline, not humanitarianism, prompted Britain’s abolition of slavery—a thesis that reshaped scholarly discourse. Throughout his tenure, which lasted until his death in 1981, Williams championed education, nationalized key industries, and promoted a cultural renaissance rooted in Afro-Trinidadian identity.
